Just discovered that people are bringing back the old technology called letterpress printing which is now considered an Art form. After a bit of searching it seems that this Art form is very much alive and popular in the world.
A simplistic description of letterpress printing
- Johannes Gutenberg in the 1400's invented the mass-production for printing using the wooden printing press
- This technique lasted until the 1980's where computer printing made it obsolete
- During it's time the technique did not change but the machine evolved. More automation, metal was used instead of wood and better paint etc.
- The letterpress printing technique used relief printing, where the movable type ( Pieces of letters and designs ) are arranged to the design you want in a caddy then the machine would roll the paint on the design and imprint it on the paper by pressing both together.
- What used to be a taboo of having indentation of the printing on the paper is now the signature of the letterpress printing finished product.
