나는 대개는 라베나 카페에서 연주하지만, 일이 많은 오후에는 콰드리 카페 친구들과도 한 차례 공연을 하고, 플로리안 카페에 들렀다가 광장을 가로질러 다시 라베나 카페로 돌아온다.

플로리안 카페 이름을 듣고, 나는 그곳이 베네치아라는 걸 깨달았다. 베네치아 광장의 카페에 앉아 공연을 들은 적이 있다. 봄날의 어느 저녁이었다. 광장은 거대했고, 카페마다 악단이 있었다.
When I heard the name of café Florian , I realized that the place in novel is Venezia. I have been sitting in a cafe in Venezia Square and have heard performances. It was evening of one spring day. The square was huge, and there was a band in each café.
한 광장에서 세 개의 밴드가 동시에 연주를 한다면 정말이지 아수라장이 될 거라고 생각하겠지만 산마르코 광장은 상당히 넓어서 그 모든 소리를 수용한다. 광장을 가로질러 걷는 관광객은, 한 밴드가 연주하는 음악 소리가 잦아든 다음에야 점점 커져 가는 다른 밴드의 연주 소리를 듣게 되는 것이다. 마치 라디오의 채널을 바꾸는 것처럼.

그곳이 산마르코 광장이었다. 그가 노벨문학상을 수상했다는 소식을 듣고 나는 그의 소설집을 다시 펼쳐보았다. 그리고 그의 소설을 나를 이탈리아 베네치아의 산마르코 광장으로 데려다 놓았다. 다시 언제, 이탈리아를, 베네치아를 갈 수 있을까.
The name of that square was San Marco Square. Upon hearing that he had won the Nobel Prize for Literature, I opened his novel again. And his novel brought me to San Marco Square in Venezia, Italy. When can I go back to Italy, Venezia again?
