I have been so into this game that i almost forgot about the weekly art contest. I took part in it twice before. And i surely wanted to take part in each of the contest but i was busy with "life things" and the little time i got, i used them to play steemmonsters and get the daily reward cards.
A few days ago I spent 20 dollars to buy booster packs. I was quite lucky and received some epic and legendary cards. Magi sphinx was one of them. It's a neutral monster with 4 lives and 2 magic attacks, so a good card to play with water splinter.
So, when i saw the art contest i decided to paint my kind of Magi Sphinx.
Here is the final painting:
I just painted the upper body because the lower part seemed too much complicated. So i added a rectangular shape in their to make it look somewhat finished. Also originally in the card she has open mouth like angry or screaming, but I struggle to draw opened mouth so i just painted closed simple mouth.
I used photoshop cc version 2019 and a wacom intuos small tablet to paint this.
It took almost 3 and half hours.
I took a lots of screenshots to show the process of this painting.
Here they are:
First i started to sketch out the whole character. it took a very little time but then refining the whole artwork took a lots of time.
As i kept sketching i used the transform tool to make it smaller so it would fit in the canvas.
I didn't sketch the wing in very detail. i thought i could just color it without having all the shapes. i was wrong of course.
I started to block in the shapes with base color, every particular group of things in different layers. such as skin and clothing and hair.
I left the wing unfinished because i wanted to do it at last.
Then i painted the eyes and started putting in light and shadows on the face.
I covered a bit more of the skin and then moved on to the cloths.
Then i painted that necklace short of thing. I used some color dodge mode to make it glow.
I used some more color dodge on the skin and the cloths.
Then i moved on to the hair. used darker color for shadows and lighter color for light area, and a bit of color dodge for reflecting light.
I added the gloves thingy on the hand.
I know the monster has magic attack but painting fire on its hand felt more comfortable.
I moved on to the wings and started to paint them and i realize without a good sketch its quite hard. so i started the sketch again.
Then i finished painting the wings.
I added the rectangular shape to give it a finished look.
