Hi Steemit!
Today I wanted to share with you a project I'm extremely grateful to be the drummer, it's called "Mickey Mousing".
"Mickey Mousing" consists of early Mickey Mouse shorts projections (from the 20's and 30's), with a simultaneous original jazz score live performance, demonstrating the perfect audiovisual synchronicity these animations offered. It was presented at The Walt Disney Co. Latin America within the framework of the Disney Expolearning 2017 event.
The main objective is to represent how music was recorded for cartoons in the late 1920s. The project seeks to recreate through a live show the working methodology of that time in terms of music composition and audio-visual synchronization.
All the music was composed and created by Marcos Barilari, a good friend of mine and guitarrist /director of the project.
The Jazz octet is composed by :
- Electric guitar
- Electric bass
- Piano and electric piano
- Drums
- Trumpet
- Tenor saxophone
- Flute
- Percussion (this is an amazing performance that usually gets all the attention, not only because he has to do all kind of sound effects to match the videos, but also because Marcos took the job of creating almost all the fx instruments by himself)
It was and still is a really challenging project, mainly because all music (yes, even drums) is written and has to be followed almost exactly to make it work, and because we have to play on a metronome in order to be syncronized to the video.
Thing is, the video has its tempo changes, the metronome has to follow that and we have to follow the metronome.
So there are songs/videos where you have to study the tempo changes in order to nail it, here's an example of me studying it before a show.
I hope you enjoyed this, and if you have any question about the project I'll be more than happy to answer!
See you around!
