Any Tattoo Artist will tell you that the Ribs are a very difficult part of the body to tattoo and I would agree with that 100%
There are many methods for tackling this notorious body placement; for me I have found that the most important thing is that my client and I can work together on completing the piece.
My clients job is relatively simple, remain as still as possible and maintain a slow, steady breathing pattern. This method is the best thing to help my clients in their pain management during the tattoo process. Laying on their side with their arm stretched overhead, physical exhaustion from the body positioning is the most common complaint I receive with this placement.
The difficulty for me, as and artist, is that client breathing during a rib tattoo causes my "canvas" to move while I work. By having my clients use this slow steady breathing technique, I am able to "follow their breath" giving me the ability to maintain appropriate needle depth and offers better control over making those long clean lines.
