The Power of White Painting
I have got a beautiful gift from my daughter, a ticket for the theater play „Art“. I was delighted, knowing that this playwright’s comedy is written by brilliant Yasmina Reza, famous French playwright, actress, novelist and screenwriter, best known for this play, „Art“ and God of Carnage. I saw God of Carnage as a movie and it was first time meeting Reza’s brilliance. It was even more exciting watching her art in its original form, as a play. Sometimes when you have great expectations it can happen to be dissapointed, as the result is under your expectations. In this case, the performance surpassed my expectations. What I like very much is how the play is organized. It is not divided into acts and scenes, which is the traditional manner. There are 17 sections (presented in the form of dialogues between two characters, or as monologues where one of the characters addresses the audience directly, or as a conversation among all three). Beside three main characters , the big white painting is a kind of figure that gives different color to different scenes , causing unpredictable changes over the play.
What are we ready to give up of our personal choices and standards for the benefits of that what is more crucial for us?
The comedy raises questions about art and friendship, taste and friendship, or is it possible to enjoy a real relationship with someone whose views on art, books, or theater are radically different from our own? Therefore, the main idea behind the whole story is - how much truth and honesty human beings can stand and what are we ready to give up of our personal choices and standards for the benefits of that what is more crucial for us. In the play the long friendship was threatened by the clear confrontation of different tastes in art. When meeting such or similar situations, people mostly argue even ready to destroy precious relationships because of such differences. Just one of many ego manifestations.
Animals and different taste
Here is an interesting example how animals do it.
My question for those who will read this is:
What are you ready to give up of your personal choices and standards for the benefits of that what is more crucial for us?
Thank you for reading and answering.
