Marxelito, 2017
Marxel is a celebrity fitness trainer in Los Angeles. His photo is captivating for several reasons - his fierce facial expression, muscle shape and shadows, overall pose, and the shades of yellow in his hoodie.

Color
Color can add a lot of energy to a piece. I've found that sometimes when there's less information in details or colors, the impact can be more powerful. I wanted to use something mixed slightly off of a normal yellow with some pale ale colors. This special color blend alone makes the painting a little different. I punched the green in his eyes and the color of his lips so that the value of the three colors used are intensified.
Shapes
There are geometric elements in his muscle pattern that I wanted to distill into simpler figures. Without shading, the lines help stylize his sculpted figure. Because of the positioning of his arms, the piece has more excitement and action.
Hair
His hair was painted as sharp wispy streaks. I made it longer than his real hair to make it stand out even more. The heavy black next to the white and yellow helps draw our eyes to his head first.
3D and Shimmer
Silver metallic paint was used to create the zipper. This helps have a slight 3D effect on the physical painting and also creates a shimmer when viewed at different angles.
Original
Simplicity is key
The real take-away from this is to not obsess over details. I didn't paint the drawstrings of the hoodie, but did it really matter? I will write more about simplicity in a future post.
Watch
Here's a little transition between the painting and the original.
