Inspired by Drawing On The Right Side of the Brain In this practice, you are to choose three drawings and copy them while looking at them upside down. I chose drawings from Tatsuyuki Tanaka's "Cannabis Works." While making the drawings, avoid naming objects such as nose, eye, legs etc. Instead, ask questions such as:
- Where does this curve start, how deep is it?
- How is that angle relative to the vertical edge of the paper.
- How long is that line relative to the one I've just drawn.
- How is that point relative to the distance from the top or bottom edge of the paper.
The objective of this exercise is to train the mind to think in spacial, relational, and comparative terms. It was a fun challenge, and I already feel an improvement in my drawing skills.
One down, two more to go!
