Don't cry over spilt wine
I'm sharing with you an illustration I have created for Doug Karr's novel Dwelling. This ink drawing is inspired by chapter 2 of the novel where the character Dorian spills his wine on the table, I have titled the following piece 'Spilt Wine'.
Dorian flopped into a chair, dowsing his glass and the table in merlot. Squeezed out of his own life.

The process of creating 'Spilt Wine'
Dowsing the glass in merlot
To start of the process of creating this illustration for chapter 2 I set a up a still life to photograph and draw from. I dowsed the wine glasses and surface underneath them with red wine. Don't worry it was the dregs from an old bottle of red, no drinkable wine was wasted in the making of this post!
I created a template mask of the wine glass and placed this over my drawing paper. I then built up washes of inks to create the tonal background.
Using a finer paintbrush I then began to add the tones and details to the wine glass. I dripped ink down the page to suggest the wine running down the edge of the glass, and added drops of ink into a watery wash to show the wine inside the glass.
