Trees on the sidewalk
In this post you can see an ink illustration that I created for Chapter Forty Two of 's superb book Dwelling, a crime novel set in New York’s Lower East Side.
Rube hopped his bike and started peddling fast, but as he hit the street, his eye caught a perception that made him freeze: a single stark white tree stood tall, springing out at the end of the sidewalk.

As it receded, he wondered if those branches contained some link to the paradox of her life. It seemed crazy, but he couldn't shake the thought that the surreal white tree had spontaneously materialized at the moment of Mioko's death.
