I painted this large Lion Last year during a phase where i was doing grand scale animal paintings. This painting took several different sittings, and has many different dimensions and layers to it. There were several times i thought to myself to stop but i just could not. I liked the way the painting looked at several different stages and thought it looked awesome in a few different stages.
Here is the initial sketch on the canvas done in graphite pencil.
This orginal Underbelly drawing consisted of paint marker drawing and some cross hatching brush strokes. There are also a few lines of spray paint.
This is all cross hatching with spray paint.
Alot of my painting is typically done at night, sometimes i stay up all night painting. I work a day job as well so sometimes you just gotta find the time. Although the wee hours of the evening may not be ideal for lighting i kinda make due and it makes it cool to see a painting in the morning in natural light.
I used a combination of both Montana Black and Gold cans, here is some more definition
It was really tough to not stop at this point. I really liked the way the lion looked at this point, however I wanted it to be "looser"and more abstract.
Although again i liked the painting at this phase i still decided to i was not content with the off center look of the Lion.
Here is a picture of me and our roommate at the time's cat (Nollie) for a size scale of the painting.
I then added some heave texture acrylic with pallet Knife technique and if you look closely defined the pupils of the lion with heavy texture Gold.
After adding more colorful acrylic, I set the painting back up and did some more crazy line work with spray-paint cans. Here is another final shot
