Happy New Year! I hope you're all warm and well-fed out there.
I went to a burn-barrel New Years Party, with a copy of Marquis De Sade's 120 Days of Sodom, and other stories. I tore out pages and threw them into the fire over the course of the night, slipping the remainder of the pages into the fire just as we ushered in the new year.
It was interesting, the different reactions. We all feel that book burning is a dangerous road that leads to censorship, but we seem to forget often that free speech and hate speech are two different things. In light of the #metoo movement, I took a book that is made almost entirely of men raping, torturing, mutilating and murdering for pleasure, and destroyed it piece by piece, because I don't think that kind of thing is worth holding onto and remembering. People are allowed to write this snuffy trash, because speech is free, but the rest of us don't have to accept it silently either. I tore a book up to protest hate, and I will make no apologies for it.
May this year be peaceful, more accepting, and bring good fortune for all.
