Though it’s been difficult, as all of the forces of nature seem aligned against it, I finally got to put my CURATOR hat back on today, and I scanned a number of NEW INDUCTEE CARDS for The Museum of Postcard Art!!!
As we all remember from the previous update, (right?), the MOPA was at 22 cards, 40 points, and 8 honorable mentions. (Do you wonder what I’m blathering about? If so, check out the first three Museum of Postcard Art posts, 1 – 2 – 3 .) Each of the photo books that HOUSE the cards for the MOPA has 24 protective sleeves, so by the end of the previous update, we were only TWO CARDS from filling the first book!!!!
With THIS update, I’m pleased to announce that the first photo book HAS BEEN FILLED! The EVER EXPANDING MUSEUM OF POSTCARD ART continues to expand! (I also bought a cheap, plastic binder with rivets to hold the “Honorable Mention” cards, which---shamefully---are not eligible for the museum… All of them except the one from Mary Counts, so far, which is already in a frame and on display in my living room.)
SOMEDAY, I hope to take The Museum on TOUR, so that people around the WORLD, (or at least people within driving distance of me---because I’m scared shitless of flying---HATE IT), can see the GLORY of this wonderful collection of art.
And now, without further ado, let’s get to the newest inductees (and a few more honorables…) We have three new honorable mention cards (all sent to me by friends, but unfortunately, they were just a bit too big to fit in the 4 x 6 protective sleeves---one of the only requirements of the MOPA game) and THIRTEEN new inductees!!! (I’ve bought several new cards and had a few sent to me, as well. I LOVE getting [and sending] postcards, so if you’re into this type of fun, leave me a comment below, and we’ll find a safe way to exchange postal addresses! Probably a direct message through Twitter or Discord, but we can burn that bridge when we cross it!)
(All of the images that you will encounter below were scanned or photographed by me from the actual cards that I have in my postcard collection. The images are included for historical / archival purposes only!)

“Shorewood Motor Inn” by (publisher name unreadable / no photographer listed)
A classic, kitschy, travel card for a little motel in the heart of nowhere! Wonderful!1 point for the card, and 2 points for it having gone through the mail, so THREE points for this one!
“What’s Your Sign?” by Mary G. Counts
[Ink and paper collage on cardboard.] 1 point for the card, 1 point for being a unique, hand-made work, 2 points for going through the mail, AND I’m going with 1 more bonus point (a block reward, if you will), for being the card that FILLS the photo book, “Museum of Postcard Art #1”!!!) EXCITING!!! A great, handmade card to finish this first book!!! FIVE POINTS!
“Madame Blavatsky’s Garden Party” by Mark (The Shark) Counts
[Felt pen, paper collage, and some kind of red, shiny, metallic paper on cardboard.] What a great card! I’m loving the materials that the Countses are making and sending my way! Wonderful, fun, funny stuff, with both sides being equally entertaining almost every time!!! 1 point for the card, 1 for being hand-made, and 2 for going through the post, so FOUR POINTS for this one! (Plus, I get to KEEP IT, so that’s awesome!) OH! And this is card number one in the book, “Museum of Postcard Art #2”!!!
“Judgement Day!” by Marghh! Counts
[Felt pen and paper collage on cardboard. Again, the rainbowing effect is an artifact of the scanning process and not part of the physical card. Sorry! (We’ve ordered a new printer / scanner. Hopefully, the new one---which isn’t almost ten years old---will work a bit better.)] 1 point for the card, 1 for being unique, and 2 for going through the mail. FOUR POINTS!
“Pink Freud” by THESHIRTYURT
1 point for the card---but it’s still a funny card!
“There is Always Time for Coffee” by Julia Henze
1 point for the card.
“Revolutionary Women: Ruth Bader Ginsburg”
My wife and I are both RBG fans! 1 point for the card.
“Is Your Cat Ready?” by ERIKAFLEA123
1 point for the card.
“Cat Got Your Soul?” by OBINSUN
1 point for the card. (Funny!)
“Robots Need Love, Too!” by RONANLYNAM
1 point for the card.
“Jungle Spider” by GREENDEER
1 point for the card.
“Classic Rat Fink” by AMERICANPOISON
I’m a fan of the classic “Big Daddy” Roth art style… For some reason, this type of stuff (Weird Wheels trading cards, MAD magazine, Pez dispensers, ViewMasters, all that stuff, just make me happy. Still… 1 point for the card.
“Nothing in the Midst Of” by Richard F. Yates
Yep---another one of my own cards, this time one printed through Redbubble. I really liked the way the colors turned out. (When you make a digital drawing, you never know how closely the PRINTED version is going to be to the digital version.) 1 point for this one.
So, for this update, we have NINE 1 point cards, one 3 point card, two 4 point cards, and one 5 point card!!! That’s 25 points, plus the 40 from last update, bringing the EVERLASTING AND EVER EXPANDING MUSEUM OF POSTCARD ART to 65 POINTS!!!! HOLY SMOKES! How is that compared to YOUR collection??? (Let’s compare notes!!!)

I received two more awesome postcards in the mail TODAY, but I haven’t had a chance to scan them yet… So!!! Let’s move on to the HONORABLE MENTIONS!
“Green Day” by (no photographer / artist listed)
Apparently, this one came from Billie Joe himself! (Sure…)
“(No Title Listed)” by Emily Winfield Martin
From a friend who I used to work with at the Writing Center in Vancouver. I love the artwork, it was just a hair too big!
“BanddeZista” (I think) by Emila Medkova
Another wonderful card from Steffen, and once again, it’s too big to fit in the museum! ACK! OOP!
No points for Honorable Mention, but they’re still cool! I’m glad I have them!!! (And, when I take the Museum on tour, I’ll bring them in an “Honorable Mention – Hall of Shame” book. That kind of stuff is funny to me…

In case anyone is wondering, I am ABSOLUTELY LOVING this game. I love getting cards in the mail from friends, some of these hand-made, some delightful and interesting art or kitsch… I enjoy SENDING cards to people and staying connected during this scary, plague-ridden time. I like that I’m supporting the US Postal Service by buying stamps to mail things to people, and I’m supporting the artists when I buy various cards off of sites like Redbubble. Last, I’m absolutely thrilled with the collection I’ve managed to put together, of awesome, interesting, funny ARTWORK, in a rather short amount of time and for a relatively small amount of MONEY!!! Altogether, this is just about the perfect game for me. I highly recommend that EVERYONE play along!!! (Again, feel free to leave me a note in the comments if you’re interested in sending or receiving a few cards!!!)
Okay, that’s it for today!!! I had a blast! See you folks LATER!!! (Though, not really, because you probably live far away...)
