When drawing portraits, it's no only about the rendition of what we see, but to catch the mind behind the face. Or to catch the soul behind the eyes. So the best portraits are those where the soul is above the physical characteristics. Even though both aspects are inextricably linked.
I always start with a line drawing to determine my composition.
In this initial phase, I investigate the forms and counterparts, because it 's important that the shapes and their ratios are correct to the millimeter. A tight basic line drawing is half of the work.
Unlike many other techniques, I always start with the coloring of the darkest parties, using the arsing technique.
Layer over layer, with a lot of patience. Until my work has been completely elaborated in the darkest parts.

From here I continue with the knee gum, in alternation with the pencil, which I use as a drawing tool to put the light in the drawing.
It's a technique that I usually use naturally, without thinking. So, it's a challenge to formulate how I make my art without thinking about the technical aspect.
