Today, i did a collage, which in Dr Tara Swart's book "The Source" is called an action board. It took me a few days of thinking and going to thrift stores looking for magazines to cut up. The idea behind the action board, is that you create a collage of what you desire in your life, When it's finished, you put it in a place where you will see it each day and the images will seep into your subconscious. I ended up coming up with the idea of thought bubbles, I am writing songs right now for my next album. So i drew out 15 thought bubbles and wrote the titles of 15 songs inside the bubbles.
I have hundreds of Guitar magazines, so i started cutting out musicians that influenced me, 5 hours later i finished it, i got some felt pens and coloured it, i was amazed when i looked at the clock that the time had flown by, getting into an art project is a great way to lose your self.
So for writing out songs, i felt it was a unique exercise to create a bunch of images and influences visually and use them to bring life to my songs. In the end, when i looked at it, it was a good take on what my dreams are. Which is basically to write and record music. Now i need to look at it each day and write the music for the songs, the lyrics on this album i wrote first, which is the opposite of how i usually write.
Changing writing habits is a good way to grow as a Songwriter. My last album was a collaboration with my brother Vaughan who wrote out all the lyrics for the "Graeme Emmott", 'Canada Eh 'album. i put his lyrics to music and could not change a word.
I also bought some watercolour paints and some brushes. Spring is here and it's a good time to watch the flowers blossom, getting into painting is very therapeutic. At this stage of my life i am looking to be creattive and heal up old wounds. Being in the moment and losing your self doing art sounds like a good Spring plan.
