Today I would like to share some info about this amazing sculpture from the Egyptian Old Kingdom, Dynasty 4.
King Menkaura (called Mycerinus by the Greeks) built this statue, found in a temple at its base.
It is the largest sculpture know about from Egypt's the Old Kingdom.
The royal headdress Menkaura wears remained an icon of Kingship in Egypt for the next 2,500 years.
The Cobra at his brow is called a uraeus. The Egyptians believed it magically protected him from his enemies.
Statues of Kings (and noblemen) from Ancient times often depict them holding implements including scepters, walking sticks, or document cases (symbolizing knowledge).
In this case, Menkura holds a folded cloth.
