Last week was the celebration of Buwan ng Wika [ Filipino's Filipino Language/ Culture Celebration] at Alex's (my 2nd born) school. Usually students all over the Philippines have to wear Filipino Traditional costume. For girls , we call it kimona at saya or Filipiniana costume ; for boys it's called barong tagalog , or others would use camisa de chino .
So, a week before that school event , me , my partner and the kids went out to buy some goods and playtime for the girls as well , at the same time i ask my hubby to inquire how much the costume would cost while the girls are playing, and when he came back, he said that it's worth 250 philippine pesos per pair , so i told him that we'll just buy the top (kimona) and i will make the skirt myself.
Here we go again , i went through another challenge of being an artist? hehe , a sewer .. another first time for me . All for my daughter , i made a simple circle skirt . what i did is i've searched on google and youtube how to make simple skirt and luckily i picked the simplest way i think. I am going to share how it became that , from a plain fabric.
I had 3 fabrics as my option , all of them came from my mom like a year ago. It all look good but i preferred to use the blue floral fabric , so it'll just look like light colored when Alex wear it.
Here are the materials i used :
*old fabric
*used garter
*scissors
*needle&thread
*pencil
*meter (pretend tape measure 😂)
First , i drew a line using the pencil , one tip of the 'pretend to be tape measure' just on that one corner , while i moved it circularly to mark the 16 inches measurement for the length , which is according to how long it'll be for my daughter.
Next , i just cut the line i did using my very sharp scissors , which from my mom as well , hehe. making my cutting really smooth.
After cutting the lower part to be of the skirt , i drew curve line to make it the waist of the skirt and cut it as well.
Taraaan!!! here's the cut version , it already look like a skirt , so i was so happy seeing it that way already . And still amazed how helpful and simple that youtube video was.
And for it to be a real circle skirt , i did use a garter from an old shorts of my hubby which he don't use anymore , then i have to sew it manually for the skirt's waist
Here is a video while manually sewing the edge and the waist of the skirt.
Here's the finished skirt
I also made this bandana for Alex's head , as simple as cutting like a triangular shape that would fit Alex's head circularly.
I also cut a semi long , a 2"x 20 inches fabric to make it a design for Alex's left shoulder on top of her kimona
And because we just bought the kimona , the size is somehow big for my daughter so i have to sew like an inch on both sides of it , so it would fit her okay.
Here's Alex on the actual event wearing the kimona at saya
. There you have it , another creation of mine , i know there's more to come. I just proved that moms can be anyone and do anything for their kids.. haha. 'Til my next D.I.Y...
