All questions man asks about life are related to the âreality of death. He differs from all other creatures. It seems as he terribly fears death even more than other creatures. If only man can understand that life is short and that death is inevitable, he can solve many problems pertaining to life. In his resistance of death, man has used science to achieve some prolongation of life which may be equated to a child playing by the sea- side, working desperately to build up his sand- house before the next wave breaks over it.

Man has often made death the centre of religious objects to invoke heavenly blessing for the gaining of everlasting life. Death happens to all living beings, but man alone has created, out of his constant fear of death, a will to endure. And out of the desire for continuity in all their conceivable forms, man has created religion, which in turn, has attempted to give a more meaningful end to life.

Although some religions believe in the existence of heavenly abodes where life would be one experience of perpetual bliss, as yet we haven't heard that the devout followers of any particular religion were keen to give up their earthly existence to be with the Almighty in heaven. Similarly, even Buddhists would prefer to cling on to their precious earthly existence although they fully realise that life in this world is nothing but suffering, and that the ultimate bliss is liberation from suffering.

The biggest problem faced in many countries today is the problem of population explosion. Ways will have to be found to curb this perpetual swelling of this stream of life. These millions need food, shelter, comfort and security. To these people the question is not 'what is the purpose of life' but 'what to do with life.' The simple answer is that one should make the best use âof life and its resources and find whatever happinessâthat one can grasp. But It should be found in a practical and righteous means.

For that purposes, religion steps in to console man, or rather awaken him to the fact that life is not dreary and hopeless, so there is a hope for a better life. All the progress in this world made by man is due to the fact that he realises he is mortal and that he would like to leave his mark behind after he is gone. If man were to achieve immortality and his days on earth were endless there would be no desire for him to make the world a better place.

If there was no death, life would become stagnant, monotonous, unspeakably burdensome and boring. If man is given the insight to realise and know the precise time of his death, he would definitely act differently and more purposefully than what he is doing presently.
'Man's body tums to dust, but his name and influence persists.' Said Buddha. Even though our ancestors are dead and gone, we can assume that they still exist amongst us through the influence created by them in the past.

By the term 'ancestors' we refer not only to our forebears but also to all those who had contributed to the welfare and happiness of others. In this sense, we can say that the heroes, sages, philosophers, authors and poets of days gone by are still existing amongst us through their influenc. As we link ourselves to these martyrs and thinkers we have chance to share their wisest thoughts, the noble ideals and to enjoy fascinating music they created over the centuries!

The cry of a man's heart out for a purpose is the dim recognition of the nature of life. When a man comprehends within himself his divine and noble nature, he no longer cries for a purpose of life. Thinking people have realized that the course of human history is determined not by what happens in the skies, but by what takes place in the hearts of men. The Buddha said that there is no other supernatural living being higher than the perfect man. Man can raise himself above the limitation of his individuality, but he cannot raise himself above the laws and principal characteristics of his kind such as old age, sickness and death.

Why fear to depart from this world?

For most people, death is an unwelcome event. With so many cravings to be satisfied, the business of living in spite of enormous suffering is never quite finished. People feel more comfortable with the mirage of happiness than with the reality of death. Attachments to worldly life create a morbid fear of death. But the truth is that all life is nothing but suffering. Death is natural and inevitable. It is not half as frightening as the thought of dying itself.

The mind has an ability of its own to create and to stretch wrong images of death.
The reason is that a mind untrained to see life with all âits impermanence and unsatisfactoriness, is likely to cling to illusions just as a drowning man will even cling to a straw. It creates uneasiness even for those who fervently pray to an imaginary supernatural being for forgiveness and a place in heaven when life seems hopeless.

Of course the fear of death is a manifestation of instinctive self-preservation. But there is a way to overcome that fear. Must do some selfless service for the welfare of others to gain hope and confidence in the dying moment. Altruism purges all selfish attachments. Purity of the mind, non attachment to worldly things, will ensure a happy parting from this world.

Strengthen the mind to face fact and reality of life. Avoid unrealistic and impracticable ambitions. Develop self-confidence. Then you will be more relaxed in overcoming your difficulties in life.

'When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life in such a manner that when you die, the world cries and you will be released from suffering.' On the other hand, we must understand that the life does not die. When the physical body is not suitable to remain anymore the life departs from the body. That is called death. However that is not the end of the life. The departed life will start to build another house or body to settle in according to past good or bad karma. So we need not fear to depart from human world.
