This is my very first, fully finished portrait that I draw using a photo of a well known singer. :D Ok, ok, hold on, I know it doesn't look like anyone famous. I'm well aware of that. Let me tell you the whole story :)
Up until now almost each drawing practice of mine was based on a video tutorial. I know I still have a lot to learn but today I felt like trying to draw something freehand, without using a video tutorial as a guideline. I'd like to make a drawing for a friend of mine from Hungary, she's crazy about a singer guy and it would be great to send her a gift for Christmas. Something unique I was thinking.
Drawing her favorite singer seemed perfect! Bold plan, I know but I have to try to draw other things as well, not just from tutorials.
The guy is full of ink and piercings, his eyes are always full of black make-up, which made my job a lot easier.
Having no guidelines, no instructions, I had to identify the angle and establish the proportions.
I'm showing you all these creepy work in progress photos so you can see how I started out and how many times I had to redraw something till I get to the finished drawing.
The jaw and the chin was a pain. My model is very skinny and it was pretty difficult to draw a skinny face that (supposedly) looks like my model.
The eyes and the nose is acceptable, I was pretty satisfied with them. I'm not saying it's what I wanted, but it's good.
I made it skinny and from that moment the face became sad. The neck is awful.
At this point I decided to go rogue and do a portrait of a human being that looks like a man, or as I always say, "at least looks like a human being".
And here it is, my first finished portrait.
I had a lot of fun drawing it, I'm still laughing when I look at him, I see the mistakes I've made and know that went wrong.
I'm going to try to draw the singer again soon. I won't give up :)
P.S. The dark mark under his right eye was intentional, the original model has a thick black line there.
Materials used:
- drawing paper 17x24 cm, 110g/m2
- 0.5 Rotring pencil
- HB and 2B pencils.
