She co-founded, with Betty Williams and Ciaran McKeown, the Women for Peace, which later became the Community for Peace People, an organization dedicated to encouraging a peaceful resolution of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Maguire and Williams were awarded the 1976 Nobel Peace Prize.

A journalist should never face jailtime for reporting the truth. If we allow Julian Assange to be extradited to the United States it will set the stage for unhinged nations who oppress freedom of speech to justify cracking down on dissenting views. It tells Saudi Arabia that it’s okay to kill a journalist in a foreign embassy. The media have the right and duty to publish to inform the community. Journalists who publish the truth do not belong in jail. When that happens, we are all at risk.
