Inside the Abandoned Henryton State Hospital
In rural southeastern Carroll County (in the United States), you could find this hospital that was instituted in the early 1920s and established as a facility to treat black patients suffering from tuberculosis. It was one of the first hospitals in Maryland that were built to provide black Americans with the same level of treatment as white Americans. Secondarily, it was used for the instruction and treatment of mentally ill adults.
The hospital shut its doors in 1985. Since then, more than 80 fires took place in the abandoned building, as it fell victim to deterioration and vandalism. Especially with the increased tourism / day trippers sneaking around. The hospital is not there anymore today, as it was demolished in 2013. I've visited the complex just a year before, in 2012, with a friend who lives close by and was absolutely fascinated by the structure. And boy, this turned me into an enthousiast as well. Hereby a photo series.
