Seeing the great leaders face and proclamations daily. Sounds like Mao Zedong doesn't it? Living in fear of reprisals, wars, changes to laws, and general scarcity of healthy resources? Sounds like life under Joseph Stalin. The U.S. and so many other countries live under a new modern sense of political impotence. The more things "change" politically, the more they stay the same; we all follow the instructions of a cabal of leaders and their minions.
Despite living in the information age (misinformation age??) we suffer from a strong reality perception of being unable to link, communicate, or effectively change most anything. The general will of the people, in continued poll after poll, shows that over 80% demand dramatic change and revitalization of priorities such as healthcare, education, environment, food safety, and consumer protection... yet nothing changes.
In living in authoritarian times we have the great gift from our political masters of being able to choose between corporate political party 1A or corporate political part 1B. We have the great freedom to live in a militarized state and militarized empire, and if we don't like it we have the freedom to hear, "you are either for us, or against us !!".
We have the great ability in feigning freedom when told to consume all the media propaganda, we have the great responsibility to salute the military-industrial-complex sponsored flag as the next wave of the battalions of conquerors and empire builders march to foreign lands, and we have the infinite liberty to sit in silence as our Constitution bows to traitorous corporations, usurping politicians, and the megalomaniac on the throne.
