I ditched my gas car about 2 months ago and I couldn't be happier with the decision.
When I first started looking into electric cars it definitely wasn't easy. Everyone made fun of me. Especially my father in-law who's in the automotive business and is a huge car enthusiast. Aren't you worried about range anxiety?
Sure I was. I didn't know what I was getting into but I started watching vlogs and subscribing to youtube channels. I spoke to people on forums asking questions about whether it really was possible ditch the fossil fuel model. Resoundingly they all said yes.
So my fears of range anxiety were quelled. I made a daily list of how many kms I drove every day. I worked out how much I was spending on gas and realized that for the money I was spending in fuel, I could trade in my car and buy a 2017 Nissan Leaf and after the government rebates my payments would be the same as what I was spending in gas. I basically got a free car that all I have to do is pay electricity for. Every day when I get home from my daily commute, errands after work and picking up the kids I have between 60-80 kms left in my tank.
Then came the worry of the first hydro bill. I re-thought everything. What if my hydro bill skyrockets? What if I'm not prepared for it. When my bill came, I was surprised, it had only gone up around $50 for the month. I thought maybe that's a fluke I'll wait for the next bill to come in. This week my second Hydro bill came since I got the car and again it was up about $45. I figure that this car cost me roughly $50 per month more than I was paying in gas and my insurance even went down.
Everyone laughed when I showed them pictures of the car on the dealers website but I think it looks great. Once I picked up the car everyone was actually surprised how much nicer it looked in person and with the tint.
My electric car requires no oil or oil changes, very little maintenance and I just plug it in at the end of the day when I get home and within a few hours it's charged up and I have a full tank when I leave for work in the morning.
One piece of advice I can offer if you're thinking of making the switch is that you definitely need to install a home charging station. I was lucky as Nissan was offering a $500 rebate on the charging station and the government was offering a $500 rebate on the charging station on top of Nissan's plus up to $500 on the cost of installation. Basically in the end I had to pay a little for the outlet to be run in my garage but most of the charging station and install was covered by the Ontario government who really seem to be on a mission to switch everyone to battery.
I have had such a great experience with this car that I've already pre-ordered the Tesla Model 3 and I went and picked up a new lawn mower which is rechargeable and uses no gas or oil.
I love my lawn mower so much I might actually write a future review on it.
