The other night I was driving my motorcycle home when I looked up to Bali's magical starry night sky and saw what I thought were 3 UFOs hovering in formation!
I had to swerve through the traffic and pull my motorcycle over to stare at them. The three craft in the sky were glowing green and hovering in triangular formation. The craft were about 400 meters above me, high in the night sky and surrounded by stars. I spent ten minutes with cars flying by staring at them and trying to work out what was going on...
Should I start dancing around in celebration of the coming of the UFOs? Should I ride away in fear? Was I tripping on Balinese mushrooms? What was going on?
Finally I worked out what the strange green-lit craft in the night sky were....
The Balinese Love Kites
The Balinese have a long and ancient tradition of kite flying which is shared by many cultures on our amazing planet. Every year there is an amazing kite flying festival held on Bali which is totally worth seeing if you happen to be here!
I have been living on Bali off-and-on for many years and I am totally accustomed to seeing the Balinese flying kites in the villages... These incredible kites range from the simple which are made from plastic, bamboo and rubber, to the totally incredible.
During the hot months the blue skies over Bali are punctuated with tiny kites held high in the sky. The Balinese make some of the largest kites to ever be seen. They are the projects of entire villages and take many people working in harmony to launch.
Like the Balinese I love kites and always have! 😍
The Balinese often stretch rubber between the spars of their kites which vibrates as the wind passes over them, creating a spooky but soothing humming.
I do not carry digital devices with me so so sadly I was unable to take a photo of these UFOs!
The Future Of Kite Flying
Although I am familiar with the Balinese kite flying culture there has been a new and interesting development to this process. I had never seen this before but it is becoming more common to see kites with LED lights attached to them at night.
This was the explanation for the three UFOs I saw hovering above me the other night. These were kites which had green LEDs woven into their structure.
I was dissapointed that the UFOs were not coming to take me on an amazing adventure but also slightly relieved.... I have a lot left to talk about on Steemit before I am ready to adventure into space! 😉
Now for the last week I have seen more and more of these humming, glowing kites in the sky. The elders in my village are marvelling at the change in technology. Although I am sure they are not very environmentally sustainable they really do look cool!
So the next time you are staring at the Balinese night sky do not be frightened when you see what you think are UFOs. They are just the Balinese making incredible kites and adding LEDs to their creations. So freaky cool!
Even just for a few minutes to think that something incredible is happening is a blessing! To wonder at life is to believe in Magic and Bali is full of Magic!
