Recently, I was reading the “20 questions with ” post by
and I came across something that Tom said that really pushed me into a state of epiphany. When Wade asked, what inspires him, Tom said that it was his dog, because it is a simple creature. And then he uttered those words of wisdom, “When life gets you down and things aren’t working, go back to basics and start simply.”
Suddenly I realized the source of stress for so many people in the modern civilization that has somehow managed to overcomplicate everything in spite of all the new awesome, cutting edge technologies that have been developed over the centuries that was supposed to make human life more convenient and stress free than ever before. I guess all that was an illusion, after all.
The bitter truth is that most of our troubles aren’t even real. They are the product of an overthinking mind trying to grasp control of all the millions of variables that are present at all times, trying to determine as much of the future as possible because, let’s face it, we are all pretty concerned about the unpredictable nature of the future.
Just Go Back To The Basics Man!
Sooner or later, we fall into a pit of dark times and get completely baffled about how to get out of it which is amplified by our evolutionary trait of trying to keep as many things as certain as possible, because that ensures survival. During those times one starts acting like a person who is drowning and is desperately trying to grasp at something.
If we could only remember to go back to basics, I think it would be easier for us all to navigate out of the mess and back on track again. It might seem easier said than done, and that might be the case too, but it certainly is a whole lot better than everything else.
In my mind, there is no hard and fast rule that may apply to every person. ‘Basic’ may mean different things to different people according to the life/career they are leading but still, if you have food on the table at the end of the day and a roof over your house, I would call it pretty basic.
It’s the rat race of the modern world that is driving everyone crazy who just want to keep accumulating more and to live dreams that corporations keep trying to sell the public to achieve which, we just keep running on that hamster wheel that we have all made for ourselves.
But, Dreams Are Important Too!
While simple living is something we should all aspire to or at least consider, it is also important to chase your dreams. I am reminded of a quote by Mahatma Gandhi, “Simple living, high thinking” which perfectly depicts what I’m trying to say.
I’m not advocating a lazy life where you only need to ensure the basics of life and be done with it. Life has to be more than that because as humans we are capable of so much more.
What I’m trying to say however, is that even by leading pretty simple lives, we can chase our dreams and play a part in pushing the human race forward even if it is just by a bit. In the end, that’s all that matters.
And for those of you who don’t want to live simply lives, that’s fine too. Just remember to go back to the basics when things aren’t going that great or you hit a roadblock on the path to your dreams.
