A day at the beach requires a way to keep warm!
At Lake Michigan.
The U.S. Coast Guard’s Christmas Ship arrived last weekend at Navy Pier in Chicago with 1,200 Christmas trees that will be donated to families in need.
This is the 18th delivery of a reenactment of Chicago’s original Christmas Tree ships from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Rouse Simmons was a three-masted schooner that sunk on Lake Michigan in 1912. The ship was bound for Chicago with a cargo of Christmas trees and got caught in a gale near Two Rivers, Wisconsin. All on board perished including the Captain who had been nicknamed Captain Santa by the people of Chicago.
The Rouse Simmons, and several other ships, sold the trees each year directly from their berths along the Chicago River's Clark Street docks. Electric lights were strung from bow to stern, and customers were invited to board the ship to choose their trees.
