Sing, sing, sing, sing
Everybody's born to sing
La dee da, ho, ho, ho
Now you're singing with the swing
—Louis Prima, Sing sing sing (cf)
er....wrong kind of singing. My bad.
This is a singing bowl used in meditation. I'm sure you've heard one before: you hit it with a rod and it rings out in a tone that you chant an om too.
If that doesn't do it for you, maybe this video will.
This is from the main altar at Mikawa Betsuin, a really nice Buddhist temple I photoed a few years ago for a job. I'll share some more photos from here in the future. It's a really nice temple and it was fun to work with them and take photos of the place.
Those books stacked behind the bowl are sutras for chanting. They are chanted in such a way that they become more like mantras, background noise to distract the mind and allow for focused meditation.
I wanted a monotone image for this. Originally I went with a standard black and white, but then got an idea to mix in some sepia tone. I loved the look so went with it. I also added some grain to give a little flavor of a film print.
