Second beer on Super Bowl Sunday, and like I say, go big or go home. I chose a second dark heavy beer, a Coffee porter with a high abv. Nothing like limiting quality over quantity! A lot of the people reading this may not have heard of this brewery but we will see. Good news is, the Eagles held on to beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl. Which is what I wanted.
Selkirk Abbey Brewing - Guilt Coffee Porter
Stats
- Brewed by: Selkirk Abbey Brewing Company, Post Falls, Idaho.
- Alcohol Content: 8.3% by volume
- IBU: 45
- Company Description: Our 2013 homebrew contest had 34 entries. This beer won. One sip will tell you why. We were happy to enter it as our Pro-Am beer at the Great American Beer Festival. We very proudly use coffee from our neighbor, DOMA coffee roasting company, in this beer.
Presentation
Selkirk Abbey Brewing uses a standard style of label and I have not seen their beers in other than 22 oz bottles. The labels are all kind of an old style format, making you think it might be an imported belgian beer. Again, the consistency of the labeling makes their beers easily spotted in a cooler or shelve. I think Selkirk is a smaller brewery located near Spokane, Washington.
The Beer
- Appearance: As you can see in the photo above, a dark beer with a dark tan/mocha colored foam on the pour, which dissipated rather quickly.
- Aroma: I didn't pick up a coffee aroma from this, it was more a belgian ale smell.
- Taste: This beer did NOT taste at all like coffee. I was actually kind of surprised, it was sweet and was clearly a belgian ale but not a taste I would associate with a Coffee Porter.
- Mouthfeel: It had a standard beer mouth feel, not carbonated but not creamy like a good coffee porter would have.
- Drinkability: Of course it was drinkable but to be honest, it took me longer to drink this than a similar beer of that size. I found myself nursing it. I was not a fan.
Rating and Final Thoughts
I only gave this a 3.0 on Untappd. It has an overall 3.75 on Untappd. I found it to be disappointing with no coffee taste at all in my opinion, and it really didn't taste much like a porter. 3 was maybe higher than it deserved. I think if you are a fan of belgian ales, you would like this. I am not a huge fan of Belgian ales, except Quads. A real disappointing beer in my opinion.
