It's been a while since I've tasted this beer, but I can still remember it pretty clearly. We were at a bar in Nieuwpoort, during our summer holiday and when I saw this beer on the menu, I just knew I had to try it. At 10 euros this was one of the most expensive beer I've ever tasted!

How was it?
The beer tasted really good to be honest, not worth the price but still one of the best beer I've ever tried. The price is so high because there is very limited production of this beer, only 60.000 cases are sold each year. This number has not increased since 1946.
When you first try this beer, you are bombarded with different flavours, so it can be pretty hard to distinguish each and every aroma individually. What I noticed immediately was that it had the perfect combination of bitter and sweetness that's very indicative of a very good Belgian Trappist. I would not recommend having more than one, I already started feeling lightheaded when I finished this one. Yes this beer is definitely overrated, but that doesn't mean it isn't excellent!
Alternative
It's well known in Belgium that the beer St-Bernardus Abt is practically the same beer as Westvleteren XII. The one major difference is that it is mass produced, thus cheaper. If you want to experience the taste of Westvleteren without spending a lot of time and money trying to find it, try St-Bernardus instead!
