Beer Review - #18 - James Boag's Draught
Brewed by:
James Boags & Son Brewery, Launceston, Australia
Alcohol Content:
4.6%
Beer Type:
Lager
History:
Boag's Draught has been brewed in the James Boag & Son Launceston brewery since the mid 1880's. It is one of the original beers produced in this 140+ year old brewery and still has a strong following of drinkers in its home state. You can purchase this almost anywhere around Australia now and is one of the first beers I partook in as a young man.
Availability:
James Boag's Draught is available for purchase in:
Tinnies (375 mL cans), stubbies (short-necked 375 mL bottles), Long Necks (750 mL bottles).
Drinkers Review:
As a macro-brewed lager, this beer does lack the flavour and originality of many other similar craft brewed lagers. I don’t think this beer is dry hopped at all hence there is no aroma except some yeast. The flavor has some citrus notes although this is another example of big aussie brewers producing cheap flavourless beer that bottle shops can keep on the shelf for 50 year with out going bad. It's OK but won't be winning any awards for "spectacular Aussie lager" anytime soon. I would place it mid-field compared to other Aussie macro-lagers, if anything and compares favourably to VB and XXXX for sure. I am a big supporter of the Boag's brewery products, however this draught has changed significantly over the years and has become a watery, bland ghost of its former self!
