It barely seems a year since I was at this festival just after starting my current job. Some of my colleagues were going and invited me along. It was another lovely day today. This time I cycled there from work (around 7 miles). That involved some new roads and I had to deal with some traffic as well as a few hills. By the time I got there a few people were already there. It got a lot busier as people finished work.
There were over 100 beers again, plus ciders. You pay for your entry and get a pre-paid card to buy the beers plus a glass. As usual I selected a few random beers that looked interesting.
First up was Barking Spider mild. I partly picked this as it's the same name as a band I was in. This was a tasty beer. I used to drink mild when I was at university, but you don't see it so often in pubs around here.
Next up was Silhouette Vanilla Beer. I was a little disappointed as it didn't taste that strongly of vanilla, but it was okay.
Then I went for Aztec Challenge porter. It's another dark beer. They use chillies in the brewing process and you could definitely taste that. Quite a smoky taste too. This is a stronger beer at 6%.
This was followed by Twin Spring. A more conventional beer with some nice caramel hints. You will notice I was only drinking half pints, and third pint for the more expensive Aztec Challenge. I like to try more beers rather than drink a lot of any one of them.
At this point I needed some food and as last time I went for a veggie burrito that filled me up nicely. There was a selection of food vendors there.
By this point I only had about £2 left on my card, so I looked for something to use it up. There are some pretty expensive beers available with some costing over £4 for a half pint! Ragnarøkkr just about used up my remaining credit. It's pretty strong at 7.3%. Interesting mix of flavours. Not sure I could drink much more than this.
After all this I still needed to get home. This involved some more exploring. I knew there was a footpath from just outside Hitchin to Arlesey called the Hicca Way. I didn't have the map with me. I went wrong a couple of times, but eventually found my way. It was a bit bumpy on the bike and I had to cross little bridges like this that were surrounded by nettles. I was in shorts. Part of the path had signs saying 'no bikes', but there was nobody around and I wanted to get home. Eventually I got onto familiar tracks. It's a good thing it stays light late now. I wasn't drunk enough to seriously hamper my cycling.
I hope you enjoyed this tale. I encourage you to seek out a beer festival and to explore new tastes.
The #BeerSaturday challenge is run by . You can do it any day of the week. He's celebrating a year of this. I've not entered for a while, so I hope this makes up for it.
Cheers!
