Jesus heals a man born blind. John 9: 1-3
1 As Jesus passed by, he saw a man blind from birth.
2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who has sinned, this man or his parents, that he may have been born blind?
3 Jesus answered: It is not that he has sinned, nor his parents, but that the works of God may be manifested in him.
This is one of my favorite stories from the book of John, Every time I read this story in my face a smile is drawn, seeing the goodness of Jesus, His mercy and the peculiar way in which mysteriously works in the lives of human beings .
To think that suffering comes because of sin, whether personal or the sin of others, is often tempting and even more so when it comes to giving a final verdict to someone. It was very easy for the Pharisees to think that this man was blind from birth because of some past sin or curse.
But it is right there where the greatness of Jesus enters the stage ... He always comes to break our mental, human and finite schemes. And to something that seems to be a mystery, He provides a wise and simple answer! Jesus corrects that popular notion that suffering comes from a detrimental sin. That healed man became a loyal follower of Christ. However the Pharisees could not understand this event since their spiritual blindness did not allow them to see!
