This is a letter to all the people who have a Big Sister, Unnie, Onee-san, Ate, Didi, Starija Sestra, and Grande Sorella in the world.
My Dearest,
Do you have a Big Sister in your family? How do you treat them? What do you feel about them?
Being firstborn doesn't guarantee stable emotion and reasoning. Especially if the firstborn is a girl. She undergoes lots of experience and difficulties.
Being firstborn, she shoulders all the problems befell to the family. She shares the pain the parents have felt. Because they're firstborn sisters, she endures almost everything and overcome them.
She might be the most naggy in the family but she cares. Because they're firstborn, she has seen the growth of you her siblings, supported you, and took care of you till you're able to stand on your own.
She provides for you, she even works for you, she scolds you when you get home late, she reprimands you when you don't study and play instead, she takes the blame from the adult for you, she protects you from the bullies at school, and she cries for you. She's on your side.
But you don't see it. Because you detested her for being favored by your parents. You hated her for being perfect, for being the role model in the family. You don't like her getting nosy in your life. You don't like her being firstborn.
Little brothers and sisters, you're very much mistaken. She sacrificed her hobbies and took on the role of the 'Big Sister' that she has. Because you were born after her that she has to protect you. Because you are her sibling that she has forsaken her wants. Because, there is you, her siblings that she becomes strong.
And then, you see your big sister in an unfavorable situation and behaviour and judge them harshly. What prejudice. Are you the type who believes on things that can be seen by the naked eye only?
Forgive her. Adore her. Love her. Because no greater feeling is ever felt by the sisters who are loved by her siblings. Love her for who she is and what she has become. Because she is like that for she has given her all to you, little brothers and sisters.
Love,
YOUR BIG SISTER
