I definitely know what I want for Christmas. Its an aquarium with bioluminecent plankton.
They get energy from the sun during the day, when its night time you can shake the sphere and the organisms will start to glow. Even though they already get energy they still need nutrients that they cant get from the sun. You would need to feed them these nutrients about once a month.
