The pale gull with the black tip on the pink bill is an immature Glaucous Gull Larus hyperboreus , an uncommon bird in Washington State, and a nice find on our big day yesterday.
Three friends and I did a "Big Day" of birding in Mason County, WA yesterday. For readers who don't know about birding Big Days, it is where a group of people try to find and identify as many species of birds as they can in a given geographic area. In our day yesterday that was in Mason County, Washington. Mason is a relatively under-birded county without many large population centers. It has the Hood Canal as salt water habitat. It was possibly the first Big Day in Mason County undertaken in January. Two of the birders on the day are hoping to do a Mason County Big Day in every month of 2022. I hope to join them when I am able.
Our totals for the day were:
85 species
81 seen by all 4 birders
Lots of fun and comraderie had by all.
Until next time. Good birding and good day!
