It is always a pleasure to see a male Purple Finch Haemorhous purpureus. by far the most common finch in this genus is our House Finch Haemorhous mexicanus, which tends to live in areas more populated by humans, and though beautiful in its own right, IMO cannot compare to the diffuse purplish color of this species. The song of Purple Finch is also wonderful, more melodious and sweeter sounding than the more harsh song of House Finch.
It may be more because we value that which is more uncommon, harder to see, and unusual, but I favor Purple Finch.
It is nice every April when our Purple Finchs start to sing again. The females also sing in this species.
Finches rule. Good birding.
