This cagey little bird is a hard one to spot; she's often underwater or hunting amongst the plants that grow in water. The Pied-billed Grebe is a small little diving bird that hunts for fish. I've never seen this grebe out of water, and rarely will you see one flying! Apparently they are very awkward outside of water, because their legs are so far set back; they are designed to swim not walk ;)
This grebe is one of my favourite birds :) I find them to be absolutely adorable; a little "water chicken", I call them in jest :) When resting, they look like a little ball of fur floating on the water, and if you're not looking closely, you won't see them! They're always looking to the sky for birds of prey, and when they spot something it shows; and the keen birdwatcher knows to look up too :)
