El Salvador's Transformation
BUKELE & BITCOIN BRING AMAZING CHANGES TO THE NATION
This video was prompted by an article I saw online stating that Bitcoin "surfers" are flocking to El Salvador due to the favourable conditions for crypto in that country. The article discusses the country's efforts to rebrand itself as a safe destination and a hub for Bitcoin and surf tourism. The tourism minister of El Salvador announced that the country has seen a record number of tourists. President Nayib Bukele, known for his social media presence, posted a video highlighting that El Salvador had gone 365 days without a single homicide, emphasising the country's safety. However, it is clarified that the figure represents the total number of homicide-free days since 2019, not consecutive days, but can you blame him for massaging the figures a little? Especially in the face of global propaganda attacks from the USA and IMF.
El Salvador, previously known for its high crime rates and affiliation with violent gangs, has undergone a transformation. In 2021, it became the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, with Bukele promoting the cryptocurrency through purchases and implementing a law requiring businesses to accept Bitcoin. The president aims to turn El Salvador into a technology hub, and it seems as though that dream has already kick started something amazing.
Despite criticism from human rights groups and institutions like the World Bank and the aforementioned IMF regarding Bukele's crime-tackling strategy and the Bitcoin adoption, the country's tourism industry has experienced a positive impact. Lonely Planet, a renowned travel guide publisher, listed El Salvador as one of the top countries to visit in 2023, attributing this recognition to the Bitcoin and surf tourism campaign. Sadly I don't have any long-distance holidays planned for this year. Maybe if they keep up the improvements Summer 2024 in El Salvador may be on the cards.
Side note: I asked people to leave a comment under the video and I have since received multiple comments from citizens of El Salvador stating that it is in fact true, and there's been a marked improvement in pretty much everything in the country. Apparently the president has a 91% approval rate and his people love him. Sounds like a good strong leader to me. Shoutout to the people of El Salvador. We are rooting for your success.
Peace & Love,
