"It is important not to create unnecessary barriers..."
I posted yesterday about the Russian central bank banning cryptocurrency exchanges, but as I guessed it seems that this could only be a temporary measure...
Today, the news from Russia is that Vladimir Putin held a meeting to discuss cryptocurrency. In an article titled: "Putin Tells Central Bank Not to Create Unnecessary Barriers to Cryptocurrencies" that appeared on news.bitcoin.com, there seems to be a more positive outlook. The key quote from Putin being this one:
"It is important not to create unnecessary barriers, of course, but rather to provide essential conditions for advancing and upgrading the national financial system."
I think this is a clear sign that while there may currently be a ban in place, Russia is keen do move forward with blockchain technology. First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov is also quoted as saying:
“it is not an overstatement to say that the president is passionately fond of it.”
So it is looking more like a China-style ban at the moment, and It will be interesting to see how this one plays out in the weeks to come.
