Many were surprised when Mark Cuban invested $25 million in eSports platform Unikrn, especially considering he had recently called bitcoin a bubble.
Founded in Seattle in 2014, Unikrn is an eSports wagering service. It features the most popular games including League of Legends, Counter Strike Go, and Dota 2.
Cuban isn’t the only big backer. Investors in the pre-sale included Blockchain Capital, Pantera Capital, Tim Draper’s Dragon Fund, and Jaxx founder Anthony di Iorio.
The man behind Unikrn is Rahul Sood. He got his start founding VoodooPC, a luxury PC maker than went on to get acquired by HP. When he left HP he was the Chief Technology Officer. After that he did a stint with Microsoft and started an incubation fund there. Unikrn was started up in 2014.
Unikrn is a fully regulated and licensed esports bookmaker. It provides a wagering platform and you can bet both as a player and as a spectator. Right now Unikrn is only available in the UK and Australia, but they have plans to expand, more on that in a moment.
The Unikrn platform already has token called Unikoin. It’s used for betting and prizes and in the last couple years over a quarter billion Unikoins have been used. Now they’re going to retire the Unikoin and create a cryptocurrency called UnikoinGold with ticker UKG.
The token sale is ongoing right now and last until October 22 or when the hard cap of 327,174 ETH is reached. If they reach the cap Unikrn would raise $100 million.
There was some good news for Unikrn today when it announced today it was awarded a gambling license in Malta. The opens Unikrn up to 80% of the European continent.
This certainly looks like an interesting project.
Anyone out there use Unikrn, what do you think?
