Now that Bitcoin has forked and there's a new player named BitcoinCash (BCC) it's time to dust off that old Ledger Nano/HW.1 and upgrade it to handle the new cryptocurrency. Please note that the Ledger Nano/HW.1 is the older, discontinued version of the Ledger hardware wallet. Don't despair! Even though the Nano/HW.1 has been discontinued you can still upgrade the firmware!
NOTE: You will need your security code and the security card for your device to complete the upgrade!
The latest line of Ledger hardware wallets and accessories can be found here.
This tutorial is NOT for the newer Nano S or Nano Blue!
Here's a step-by-step way to update your Ledger Nano/HW.1
If you don't already have it you will need the Chrome (or Chromium) web browser.
Download and install the Ledger Wallet app for Chrome here.
Open the Ledger Bitcoin app and plug in your Ledger Nano/HW.1 into any available USB slot.
You should be prompted to update your Ledger Nano/HW.1. Click the "Update" button and the following screen hould appear:
- Click the "Continue" button. You will be prompted to either scan or enter your security card code. Here's a picture of the screen:
- You will now be prompted to verify the code using the security card that came with your Ledger Nano/HW.1
You will then be asked to un-plug/plug-in your Ledger Nano/HW.1 several times. This step is clearing the Nano/HW.1 of it's previous contents.
A screen will be displayed that states that your Ledger Nano/HW.1 is being updated. The final step will take you back to the step asking if you want to create a new wallet or restore from a backup.
Yay!!! You now have an updated Ledger Nano/HW.1 that will process both BTC and BCC!
