Interoperability or the possibility to connect two different virtual worlds seamlessly, is moving one step closer to reality because developers actually embrace the concept. The developers behind Somnium Space have claimed a parcel within Cryptovoxels to build a teleportation portal between the two blockchain-powered virtual worlds. The announcement came just moments after our publication of an interview with Cryptovoxels' Ben Nolan about the potential of a digital passport.
Nolan replied to the announcement of Somnium Space by saying he 'will have to build a portal back the other way'. Sebastien Borget from The Sandbox also jumped in on the discussion about a digital passport. He said:
"It's great seeing Cryptovoxels, Somnium Space and The Sandbox share a common vision of an interoperable metaverse. There should be no boundaries in the virtual space, different worlds can connect together"

At the moment Cryptovoxels and Somnium Space are already live. Cryptovoxels recently sold out, and is now looking at the introduction of additional islands. Somnium Space is working towards its second land sale, while doing weekly auctions to create some hype.
The Sandbox is still under development, without having anything live. However, game studio TSB Gaming pledged to launch the beta of The Sandbox this summer. In the coming weeks they will likely launch the fourth and final pre-sale, to which everybody can register now.
Interoperability in different shapes
There are all kinds of interoperability between games, virtual worlds and other software. In an earlier article I wrote about the interoperability of tokens. For example allowing a weapon from one game to be used in multiple games. However, interoperability is also the way different content gets connected, like how the world wide web became a standard for the internet.
There are multiple organization working on creating a standard for all kinds of blockchain functionalities. For example, Microsoft, IBM and Intel introduced a standardization for the way we need to talk about tokens. The Blockchain Game Alliance is working on standardization of protocols as well. In addition there's the M3 Organization that's working on creating tools that are capable of connecting virtual worlds seamlessly.
