I just watched Jsnip's video on the WannaCry ransomware virus and he has come up with an interesting theory. He suggests that the elite (NSA) may have deliberately let this virus out to further implicate Bitcoin in nefarious activities. The cryptocurrency has already faced some criticism for its use on darkweb sites such as Silk Road and the "anonimity" that it offers criminals such as drug dealers and money launderers. Jsnip suggests that the current ransomware attack could be one of the steps being used by the powers that be to make Bitcoin illegal.
I will add that if companies stop using Bitcoin due to its tarnished reputation then the value will surely decrease because there will be fewer legal avenues to make purchases with the coin. It is quite possible that then you would see a shift of money out of Bitcoin and into more centralized crypto currencies with more authoritarian control i.e. under the control of the banks.
