In news today that will further divide opinion on whether bitcoin is used as a means to money-laundering and to fund illicit activities, it is alleged in https://bitcoinist.com that twelve (12) Russian officials have been indicted by the U.S Department of Justice. The Russian officials are accused of interfering with the U.S presidential elections in 2016 by mining Bitcoin to fund hacking operations against the U.S.
Since Bitcoin's inception in 2009, debate on whether bitcoin is used for criminal and illicit activities or not has been raging on. Because of Bitcoin's pseudo-anonymous properties, a lot of countries and regulators are cautious of it and the other cryptocurrencies. Some countries are monitoring it closely and some have even banned it completely.
On the other hand, advocates of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies argue that cash is more anonymous. They point out to several studies that have been conducted by International institutions and have found no link between cryptocurrencies and illicit activities. As such, the conclusion has been that cryptos pose no significant risks.
There are always pros and cons to any system or situation in life. To be able to make a good decision, you need to weigh the good and the bad thoroughly before coming to a decision.
