We are all now connected by the Internet, like neurons in a giant brain - these are the exact words of famous scientist Stephen Hawking (1). Without any signs of doubt, I think we can all agree - we have now reached a point when we cannot imagine our existences without the wonders that the Internet provides. Now, it's easier than ever to communicate with the ones we love, to work with partners or business all around the world, to constantly stay up to date with the most recent news or to enjoy all sorts of entertainment options.
Can you live without it?
We have now reached high speeds of internet connection, stability, reliability and accessibility - be it on cellular data, through wired or wireless connections. Statistics show that there are currently around 300 million wifi networks, at a global level (out of these, 82% represent home wi-fi connections and 18% public wi-fi networks).
Only during the last 4 years (2013-2017), the number of wireless access points has increased 9 times. Why? Posible answers may be:
- we use more mobile devices than ever;
- we are working more hours and we are constantly on the move, always carrying the laptop or tablet with us;
- studies show that we spend around 5 hours a day looking at our smartphones’ screen, using various chat or social media applications, sending or reading emails, browsing the internet, looking at videos, etc.
In other words, our everyday life is dependent on the internet connection. That is why in the central areas of the cities, individuals may come across dozens of wi-fi networks. But things are not that easy - most of the time we notice that these internet connections need a password to log in. Most of these networks are owned by residential buildings - each month, the owners of these routers pay a massive fee to their internet provider. The invoice they pay (through the contract they signed) contains a lot of bandwidth - however, they do not use it all and end up paying much more than it is worth, for their own needs.
World Wi-Fi - the next generation of Internet
Now, imagine a way to motivate people to open their wi-fi networks, in a manner that would benefit everyone. First of all, owners of this connections would need a compensation right?
World WI-FI designed a modern platform that offers wifi providers an incentive they can’t refuse - money. Being built through the collective efforts of the community, World Wi-Fi is the first project of this kind - a decentralized free wi-fi network powered by blockchain.
How will it operate? In a nutshell, all users who want to participate (homeowners, residents, business owners) will need to have a router - these devices will receive settings that will enable the networks to offer free internet access to users in their area. And just as we mentioned before, owners of this routers will be rewarded with cryptocurrency - through the display of internet ads.
This win-win operation will offer free internet for the users, will generate revenue for the router owners (by allowing other individuals in the area to use their bandwidth) and will guarantee a targeted reach for the advertisers.
