When I attended the university of Technology, Jamaica.
Yup, this picture looks very old. I can't even remember who took it. It is actually not that long ago...but boy how times have changed.
As a university student growing up in Jamaica, finding ways to earn extra cash was always on my mind...I don't know, if it is something with Jamaicans, or it was just me, but I always had something going on. It was more than just the cash, it was about "hey, I can do this and bring value while earning".
So what the hell did you sell?
I was selling candy shipped from Florida, MP3 players, women's accessories ( to individuals as well as to stores wholesale), cell phones ( ah the Motorola days ). At one point I was even selling photocopied books ( this was one of the most profitable). Now before you knock me and say "that is illegal to photocopy books and sell them". Just remember, this is Jamaica, many students couldn't afford the original books, I saw it as bringing value/supply demand. The set up of the "biz" was quite good too, because I didn't have to do the manual work, just the network.
You would think this was my GF, but actually we were just good friends....Fine yes I got stuck in the friend's zone. Ouch....can't even remember her name though.
The opportunities that exist today
Now why and for who am I writing this post? Well I am writing this to the students in university ( especially in Jamaica) who may be looking for a way to earn some extra income and at the same time be on top of cutting edge technology. I know most students in Uni are big on social media. Not a day goes by without checking up on the people you follow, making posts, sharing thoughts or just lurking.
What if I told you.....
There are social media platforms where you can be reward for your content as well as lurking and liking? ( And you don't need 1000 followers)
Well there are actually a number of them and I want to teach you about this sector of new era social media built on blockchain technology ( Block what!!!? > The thing that makes Bitcoin what it is) . I think by now most university students in Jamaica have heard of Blockchain technology but don't see its application around them in daily life. Maybe the only thing you know is "Bitcoin". And maybe just hearing the word "Bitcoin" makes you a bit cautious, kinda like saying "Stock Market" or "FX trader". Yeah, at first they may all seem like scary territory, but 1 of the three you can enter with NO RISK. Can you guess which one?
YUP Blockchain technology
Right now you are reading this post on a new era social media platform called ReggaeSteem built on the Steem Blockchain. If you scroll down to the bottom of this post you will see some numbers with the word JAHM beside it. Those are digital Tokens I am earning for this content...and get this, it can be traded for other digital tokens like Bitcoin and also traded for cash. Sounds too good to be true? Well so did flying to Japan by plane in 1907, and now people are doing it everyday. ( I am in Japan as I type this).
I was in charge of logistics for our marketing seminar, making sure the goods were there to be sold and the tents set up and put down.
Looking for 25 university students who
want to learn about this cutting edge technology while actually creating content and earning. In June of this year in Negril, Jamaica, ReggaeSteem will be having its first ever JAHMFEST, a conference showcasing Blockchain projects and how the technology can be used in Jamaica now. We will also have a workshop where we are inviting 25 university students to come and learn how to use ReggaeSteem and other Blockchain applications. We are offering this workshop free for the first 25 UNI students.
JAHMFEST June 26th-28th Negril, Jamaica. For more information see here.
If you would like to be in attendance, please send an email to ReggaeSteem@gmail.com. We will ask you to show your university ID so we can know that you are actually a Uni student.
Ah yes I broke out the "I'm in a suite" picture, lol does that even instill trust these days?
