As a backup witness, I am very curious who the top 19 witnesses are and what they are up to. I was particularly interested in one user because at a glance it did not seem like they were doing much as a witness. The user is . They basically created a witness post about 7 months ago, and other than that, have only left a few upvotes and comments. My first reaction was "Hey, this dude has got to go! Make room for me :)".
I dug into it a bit more and found out some basic info. According to Steemstory.com, was the 629 user to singup. That's almost as early as Dan and Ned! This person has really been around since the beginning. They are also starting to become a fairly active curator. They have made 329 upvotes, but I've noticed that a lot of it has been happening recently. That alone is obviously not enough to hold a top 19 witness position though.
Then I found out why. What I found most interesting about this user is how they are running their witness node. According to their witness post, and datasecuritynode.com website - "It will be secured in an underground nuclear bunker protected against all forms of man-made and natural disasters."
If you think about it, that's actually pretty cool!
I was talking to a friend of mine the other day about Steemit, and I told him that whatever is posted on the blockchain is stored "forever". "Forever?" he said. (He is a lawyer and so he likes to question the meaning of specific words.) It was pretty fun to be able to tell him how permanent the blockchain really is. As long as there is a node to run the blockchain, the data will always be there. Even in the event that we blow ourselves up and nothing of humanity is left - our Steem block-chain will still be sitting there in a bunker somewhere - waiting for some future civilization that colonizes the planet to dig it up :)
