The Chinese Shar-Pei, is a breed of dog known for its special features of deep wrinkles and a dark purple tongue. The breed originates from Canton, China. The English name comes from from British spelling of the Cantonese equivalent, which means "sand skin" and refers to the texture of its short, rough coat. As puppies, Shar Pei have numerous wrinkles, but as they mature, these tend to loosen and spread out. The Shar-Pei is a medium-size dog, weighing 45 to 60 pounds.
In the past, the dogs were used to guard property and to hunt. Some Shar-Pei were fighting dogs. The Chinese Communists, when coming to power in China, almost wiped them out but a few dog breeders in Hong Kong and Taiwan kept the breed alive.
This dog breed needs socialization at an early age. They are naturally clean and easy to housebreak. They are devoted to their owner's family but hostile towards strangers. Good with older kids that know how to handle them but not recommended with other dogs. Somewhat active; a good walk or two a day will be okay. These dogs bark only when necessary.
