Shallow Thoughts
For the first time in forever I took a REAL vacation with my family. . . we flew to Kiawah Island in South Carolina to get away from our daily grind in Texas so we can relax and unwind together. The flight was smooth, save for some shenanigans with the American Airlines inflight entertainment system, and we were at the beach in no time:
It's certainly not the white sand and turquoise water we're accustomed to in the tropic, but I'll take it!
Deep Thoughts
I read an article entitled Bullshit Jobs by David Graeber over the weekend, and it resonated with me on many levels. I spent over a decade working in the financial industry and realize it serves the important function of providing capital and liquidity to productive industries, but if all bankers suddenly disappeared the world wouldn't grind to a halt. The same thing certainly cannot be said of garbage collectors. One of the reasons I like the company I work for is that we sell a product that promises a reduction in the amount of time people spend doing busy-work. I firmly believe time is the most valuable thing we have, so hopefully these clients take the time that they save and use it to do something truly useful. Otherwise we're just working for the sake of working.
One other thought. . . how can I shrink my own job such that everything can be accomplished in 15-20 hours per week? ;-P
