Happy Victory Day to everyone who celebrated it today or yesterday (if out in Western Europe). It's the day we remember our grandparents who fought against the Nazis in World War 2.
Both my grandfathers fought and I can't tell you anything with precision here. One was heavily wounded after a point. The other was on the front lines for the entire duration of the war. No one ever came back talking about what they've seen except to other veterans so I can't tell you much more than a few random things I was taught as a kid for when I'd have to fight. Everyone who survived WW2 expected another war like that. That war never ended for anyone who remembered it.
And we don't just remember the soldiers but also the regular civilians, particularly those who refused to collaborate with the Nazis. The victims of the Holocaust, both those murdered and those who survived, those people we sometimes saw with tattooed numbers on their arms. We don't forget the Germans who got drafted. Even if no one celebrates them in Germany we still remember them. It's a long day and we can spare some thoughts to the enemy because in a war, there is a victorious side and thankfully that was ours (or I wouldn't be here today), but there are no winners.
A few weeks after I started posting on then Steem there was a Holocaust denial post. And no one seemed to give a shit. There was a whole metric shitton of pro-Nazi propaganda too in the name of various excuses. I won't name names. Nowadays, the word 'Nazis' is used for everything as beneficial. These are facts. Some of you who have Twitter see that I often share posts by the Auschwitz Memorial, typically about children. The real Nazis are those who hunted down those children and murdered them. Don't let these kids be forgotten. Just like don't let it be forgotten that the Nazis were stopped by those who don't pass on what they've seen.
Anyways, have a Happy Victory Day.
